As a beginning to your Scientific Skin Care Regimen, Dr Young suggests starting with a Sensitive Skin Cleanser, Tri-retinol complex, and Sunscreen. He also suggests an At Home Glycolic Peel for the full benefit of his Scientific Approach to Skin Care. If you tolerate this initial program you can then consider 15% Alpha and beta hydroxy acid lotion. The other products can be added on based on your own specific needs. But the complicated order below is only when you add other skin specific products that are suggested just for your skin. But to simplify things, you can stick with just the basics that Dr. Young suggests: 1. Sensitive Skin Cleanser, 2. Tri-Retinol Complex, 3. Sunscreen, 4. At Home Glycolic Peel, 5. 15% Alpha / Beta Hydroxy Lotion.

For cO2 Laser Resurfacing the 3 main products you need to prepare your skin for the procedure are:

1. Tretinoin (or Brand Names - Tri-Retinol Complex, Aberela, Airol, Renova, Atralin, Retin-A, Avita, Retacnyl, Refissa, or Stieva-A)
2. Hydroquinone (or Brand Names - Eldoquin, Epiquin Micro, Lustra, Melanex)
3. Hydrocortisone Cream 1% (You can buy this over the counter

Here is our basic Scientific Approach to our Skin Care below. But before you start on this program make sure to read through this whole page to fully understand how to do this and to avoid complications from the topicals:

More explanation of our Skin Care Program with our additional explanation of our At-Home Glycolic Acid Peels:

Please read about these topical medications on rxlist.com to see if there are any reasons you should not be taking these medications.

Apply one application of Retin-A / Retinol complex / Adapalene (These are all retinoic acid derivatives) wait 2-4 days and until all of the redness goes away before you apply the next application. (Doing a test patch in a small area may be the best way to start. You should wait for 2-5 days for the test patch to reveal a reaction.) Keep doing this until you can tolerate the Retinoic Acid on a nightly basis.

Once tolerating the Retin-A daily you can then start the hydroquinone / epiquin along with the Retin-A and do the same for this topical medication as well. You should wait 2-3 days for all of the redness to subside before applying the next application of Hydroquinone just as you did with the Retinoic Acid. This approach should be done until you can tolerate both of the medications.

The Hydrocortisone 1 % can be started with either the retinoic acid or epiquin / hydroquinone topicals. The hydrocortisone can help decrease the inflammation that is caused by the other two topical applications.

If you are having an Active FX laser procedure, these medications should be started 4-5 weeks before your laser procedure and stopped 1 week before your procedure. These medications should be restarted no earlier than 4 weeks after your laser procedure but you should check with your Doctor first before doing so. If you are doing IPL these medications can also be started 3-4 weeks before your first procedure and then stopped 7 days before your treatments or next treatment. You can resume the Retin-A and Hydroquinone 7 days after your IPL.

If you are just going to use these topical medications without a procedure, you should use the same approach. Some people will only be able to tolerate these medications once or twice a week. Everyone is different and you will find out on your own how much you tolerate these topical medications. It may be that you tolerate it every other day, every three days, or once a week, etc. While you are starting your topical medication you can call or email your Doctor and / or his staff to help you through this.

At Home Glycolic Acid Peels Instructions:

1. Cleanse area with mild cleaner/soap
2. Set timer for 2 min
3. Apply glycolic acid pads to skin. Note: if burning too badly,
shower off immediately
4. Flush thoroughly with clean, cold water after 2 min
5. Increase frequency from: once per week, to twice per week, to
three times per week, as tolerated
6. Increase duration of application from: 2 min, to 3 min, to 4 min,
to 5 min, as tolerated

The above are some general recommendations for the at-home glycolic peels. You should be very conservative when you first start doing these. You should never apply these glycolic peels when your skin is significantly inflamed. If you are trying to treat active acne, the inflammation should be limited to just those inflamed and infected pimples. If in doubt, you should consult your doctor here.
