Facelift / Rhytidectomy

The Cause:

A youthful face is described as having a healthy glow, with no wrinkles, no protruding fat deposits, and without blemishes. As one ages, the fine wrinkles and course wrinkles become increased. The result is that the reflection of light from the face becomes less prominent because the wrinkles reflect the light in different directions. The healthy glow is lost. The ligaments of the face along with the other fibrous sheets of tissue within the face lose their strength and elasticity as we grow old. Fat within our eyes pooch out while other areas descend due to gravity. The skin of the neck become lax and then the "turkey gobblers" appear and the jowls become prominent.

The Treatment:

With surgery and other adjunctive procedures, you can improve many elements of the aging face. With a facelift, the turkey gobblers or excess neck skin can be addressed. The jowls are also correctable through a facelift. What a facelift has difficulty improving to a significant degree are the nasolabial folds. But proper attention to these structures can be given to improve their appearance. This can be done with more advanced facelifting techniques and additional skills to attack these hard to get at structures called the nasolabial folds. At this point, many surgeons begin discussing the benefits of a midface lift in order to further improve these folds. As part of the facelift, artistic use of liposuctioning can further take away unwanted deposits of fat that can detract away from a person's beauty. When done carefully, this can contribute a great deal towards a wonderful result.
