The nose is vitally important to the beauty of the face. It is one of the center points of attention when someone looks at a new face. Its appearance can have a huge impact on how a person looks. Classical studies involving people evaluating a picture of a boy, show that people look at three important shapes on the face: the eye, nose, and mouth. Sort of obvious, but what can we conclude from this information can help us figure out what makes a face beautiful. Based on my theory the iris is the most important shape on the face. Following this, are the nasal tip and lower lips. These three structures are vitally important to an observer when they evaluate a new face. Because of this, they need to be in balance with one another. Hence the distances that separate these structures must be equal. Hence, from the iris to the midline, from midline to nasal tip, from nasal tip to lower lip, and from lower lip to the chin's lower edge should all be equal distances. The end result is balance to the face and thus ultimately beauty. In addition, because we spend so much time looking at the iris, it’s size is important because it dictates the size of other structures. The nasal tip and lower lip should be equal to the size of the iris to bring balance and harmony between these structures. Based on this information, we can say a lot about how a nose should look if it is going to be considered aesthetically pleasing. First, the nasal tip should be an equal distance from the iris and from the lower lip. If this is reached, balance will also be reached. The tip also should be the size of the iris. If it is larger it detracts attention from the iris. If it is smaller, there is less association with the iris and lower lip. Both states can detract from the beauty of the nose and face as a whole. The bridge of the nose (or nasal dorsum) should be one iris width wide based on this same reasoning. The part of the nose surrounding the nostril is also dictated by this force, this area is called the alae. Its size should also be an iris width in radius. The total width of the nose should not exceed 2 iris width’s at the top of the nose and 3 iris widths at the bottom. |
The Treatment:
A rhinoplasty, or nose job, is a procedure that a person can undergo to alter the shape of the nose to allow it to become in balance with the rest of the structures of the face. It is the most common procedure done to alter the way the shapes on the face relate to each other. Part of this is because it is the easiest surgery to do to bring balance to the face. It is much harder and more radical to alter the spacing between the eyes and the length of the face to reach this goal of balancing.
We can approach the structural elements of the nose either with no external incision or with a very small incision (less than 0.5 cm in length) at the bottom of the nose. An incision that is most always very hard to distinguish. From there, the cartilages and bony elements of the nose can be altered to change the way the nose looks. We can make the nose shorter or longer, closer to the face or farther from the face and we can make the tip of the nose smaller or larger depending on what it needs. We can also make it more narrow or wider depending on what would make it look more aesthetically pleasing. If you also are having problems breathing, we can improve this issue at the same time. Bruising resolves around 1-2 weeks. But final changes to the shape of the nose can take longer. |
