There are many options for Dark Circles. Traditionally, the Lower Eyelid Lift has been used. This procedure entails taking out fat and excising | taking away skin from the lower eyelid.  In the past, many of these lifts were done through an incision 2-3 mm below the eyelashes on the outside. The skin was elevated and the fat underneath was removed. Then a mild amount of skin was taken. This approach often lead to problems with the eyelid, like retraction and the eyelids pulling down. The Transconjunctival approach to the Lower Eyelid Lift was introduced as a solution. This approach entail an incision inside the eyelid. Fat was removed and a pinch of skin was taken from the front. In short the middle part of the eyelid was left undisturbed and this was thought to prevent eyelid problems. Below are some Facelift Lower Eyelift Before and After Pictures:

The above Lower Eyelid Lifts were done the traditional way of making an incision in the outside of the lower eyelid about 3-4 mm below the eyelashes. Fat was taken out and some skin was excised from the front incision. They were not done through the transconjunctival approach.

What was found was that the traditional reducing procedures, that is, procedures that removed fat and skin tended to make people look more hollow. From there, the idea of volume enhancement, or adding volume for eyelid rejuvenation started to take on more popularity. Fillers were the first to make a significant impact in this regard. Click this link to learn about Fillers for Under Eye Hollows. Here is an example of how Fillers in the Lower Eyelid can help Hollows and Dark Circles:

One major disadvantage of Fillers was there limited time of effectiveness. Most fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, etc tend to last only 6 mo to a year. This limited effectiveness naturally lead to a search for longer lasting options. Fat injections then started to take on more popularity, or more likely a rebirth since it has been used for decades before. The Fat was taken from somewhere in the body (most commonly the abdomen) and then it was injected to different areas of the face and Lower Eyelid. You can get more of a discussion of this by clicking here: A New Look at the Aging Process. What you will find here is that the understanding of aging is undergoing a change. Traditional reductive procedures are based on making the old raisin look like the younger grape by taking away the folds of the raisin. As you can imagine, this can never make that raisin look like the grape again. The only way to do this is to add volume to the raisin to create the grape again.  This is why we introduced the YoungVitalizer to approach reversing aging with this newer understanding:

There are other options for the lower eyelid lift that we should mention. We only mention them because they are options out there for Lower Eyelid Bags and Dark Circles and you will be presented these options. A Mid Facelift is used to lift up the middle part of the cheek and is done through the eyelid or through the forehead lift incision. In our opinion, the results have not really shown good promise. Also this approach is very invasive and fraught with complications.  Laser Resurfacing can create some collagen underneath the skin that can help with the darkness slightly but is inferior to many of the procedures above. We think the most important contribution of lasers is to combine it with the procedures above to help with the results.  Inferior orbital rim implants, click here to read onFacial Implants, can improve the lower eyelid hollow, dark circles but this is more invasive and requires an implant which many people are not comfortable with. Also these implants don’t have near the potential of getting more natural results that you can get with fat injections or other approaches like the YoungVitalizer.
