Below is a patient who wanted to improve his jawline through a chin implant revision. He was also considering a jaw implant to strengthen the appearance of his jawline. He originally wanted his chin longer and stronger and had a chin implant placed several years before to achieve that. On exam, we noticed that the chin implant had shifted and the left side was much higher than the right by about 1-1.5cm after the original chin implant procedure. This made the chin implant’s lateral edges slide off the bone which created a deformity on the inferior edge of the jawline on both sides. This shifting also led to an asymmetric, crooked chin where the left chin was higher than the right chin. The appearance before the revision showed that his chin was shorter than he wanted. From the side view, there was also bunching just under the lip because the chin implant had moved there.

After the chin implant revision in the front images, the chin is longer. The left side matches the right and is in the lower, more correct position. From the side view, the chin implant no longer rides high creating a blocky chin where the lip dramatically dips before it transitions into the chin. After the chin implant revision, the transition from the lip to the chin is more graceful and aesthetically pleasing.

Chin Implant Revision Surgery Keys for a successful procedure!

Below is a live video demonstration of a chin implant revision procedure. Things to consider in this video and demonstrate important points is that removing the implant usually requires replacing the larger implant with a smaller implant if you want to remove it or you think it is too big. If you completely remove the implant and put nothing in there, your chin could ball up and create deformities. Screwing in the chin implant: Also securing the implant with screws helps prevent infections and ensures symmetry, less movement and more accurate results. Bone erosion: Also chin implants that are not fixed tend to move. When they move superiorly the area above the inferior border is soft bone and more likely to erode.
