What Are Marionette Lines?

Marionette Lines are the lines in front of the jowls that are also the extension of the nasolabial folds below the lip area. They are formed by the descent of the cheek over this area. The tissue around the mouth is tightly adherent due to muscle skin ligaments that hold the skin tight against the deeper tissue. These same ligaments are not as prevalent in the cheek area. This is why the cheek tissue rides over the marionette lines toward the mouth area. The results are marionette lines. This same reason and explanation can also explain the presence of the nasolabial folds.

How Marionette Lines Are Treated

A very popular and the least invasive way of treating the marionette lines is through the use of fillers or injectables like Restylane®, Radiesse®, Juvéderm®, Perlane, etc. These products are used to fill the lines. There are many ways of doing this, and the secret is knowing where to put them. Fillers are considered by some to be more of a camouflage technique. They are used to fill in the lines.

The more natural way of treating the marionette lines is by filling the whole face and specifically around the mouth area, to treat the marionette lines. This is becoming more and more defined in the facial plastic surgery world. Fat injections are another way of reversing the marionette lines. Again, the secret is knowing where to put it to really treat the marionette lines.

Surgical & Advanced Treatment Options

Facelifts are a more invasive way of treating the marionette lines, and this was done in these before-and-after pictures. Facelifts lift the tissue beside the marionette lines so that they are pulled back, and the lines are diminished. To improve the appearance of the marionette lines even more, you can fill around the marionette line area with fillers | fat injections.

Skin Resurfacing & Subtle Refinement

Laser resurfacing with a CO2 laser can also decrease these lines by shrinking the skin and also by creating a layer of collagen underneath the marionette lines to help efface or reduce their appearance. Chemical Peels | Dermabrasion can improve the marionette lines the same way. The improvement through laser resurfacing | chemical peels | dermasanding is more on the subtle end and does not treat the marionette lines by reversing the way the lines were formed. The real way to reverse the way these lines were formed is through volumizing and shaping.
