What Are Nasolabial Folds?

The nasolabial folds are the folds around the mouth. These folds are made up of fat, skin, connective tissue, and some muscle. They are the continuation of the marionette lines from below and are due to the same reasons that marionette lines form. The nasolabial folds are the folds that are superior to the corners of the mouth. The folds below the corners of the mouth are considered marionette lines. They are brought on by a few sources. With age, you lose important volume in your face. This causes the tissues to descend downward or droop. There is also a movement inward with the volume loss. The loss of volume in the cheeks, jaws, and mouth area all contribute to the nasolabial folds getting deeper with age. Another reason for the formation of the nasolabial folds is the loosening of ligaments within the face, which can cause the tissues of the face to sag.

Treatment Approaches for Nasolabial Folds

Facelifts have been used in the past to help treat the nasolabial folds. For some unknown reason, facial plastic surgeons who specialize in the face have realized some limitations to the correction of the nasolabial folds. Much research has been done to figure out what makes up the nasolabial folds, and some of the answers have been found in restoring volume. Liposuction of the nasolabial folds has been tried and has mixed results. Surgeons have actually surgically excised or cut out the folds themselves. The scar from this has been a major deterrent. Fat injections have been tried, but the results have shown some issues with the technique. Midface Lifts have been employed and have created a lot of dissatisfaction due to the complexity of the procedure and problems, coupled with the lack of results. Fillers have become very popular for filling in the nasolabial folds. The results from this approach have shown some promise, but they are less than perfect.

Limitations of Traditional Treatments

Usually, fillers are aimed at filling the nasolabial folds directly. Although this has improved the appearance, sometimes the results are less than optimal. The reason for this is that the face ages globally and throughout the face. Filling in just the nasolabial folds is an approach that camouflages the area, or what you can consider a patching type of solution. Botox® | Dysport® have also been used in the past to blunt the smile so that the folds don’t get as deep. This sometimes works to a subtle degree but lasts only 3 months or so.

A More Comprehensive, Natural Approach

The YoungVitalizer is a unique technique that treats many areas of the face, including the nasolabial folds. Dr. Young developed this breakthrough incision-less facelift technique that we feel gets long-lasting, better, and more natural results than traditional procedures.

As we alluded to before, one thing that people may not fully know is that there is also an inward movement of the tissues. This is an important idea. So with age, your tissues fall inward and downward. So the correct movement to restore youth is a movement in an upward and outward direction. The YoungVitalizer does just that.
