Lasers remove skin to a point that is safe and deep enough to allow skin cells located in the skin appendages to "resurface" your skin. Laser resurfacing involves using a laser to take away the top layers of your skin to reduce pigmentation issues, sun spots, fine wrinkles, superficial lesions, and to achieve smoother skin. It can lead to an improvement in the texture of your skin and a lighter and even skin tone. We have a unique approach in how we use laser resurfacing and dermabrasion techniques that allow us to go to a safer and deeper layer and reconstruct and reduce those lines around your mouth.

A Deeper Approach

Deep FX is a deeper treatment of the tissue through thin cones of energy. It targets the deep dermal layers of the skin and provides exceptional results on deep wrinkles, scars, and lip lines. Total FX combines Active FX and Deep FX for maximum results. The two techniques work synergistically together to improve results with Active FX treating sun spots, red spots, fine wrinkles, and uneven texture, while Deep FX covers the deeper tissue for skin tightening and mild lifting. Total FX avoids the longer downtime of traditional laser resurfacing.

Types of Lasers

Laser resurfacing can be accomplished using different types of lasers. Ablative lasers remove the top layers of your skin. Erbium and CO2 are the most common ablative lasers. CO2 lasers can get a deeper peel in a safe way. Erbium lasers resurface less deeply, often a second choice to CO2 lasers. Ablative lasers are similar to chemical peels and other resurfacing approaches in taking away the top layers of the skin and allowing the skin cells from deeper within hair follicles to “resurface” the skin.

There is a layer of the skin, the papillae, where the skin cells go along a wavy structure. Deep laser resurfacing proceeds into the dermis and the deepest layer where the papillae end. The cells deeper than in your hair follicles and other skin organs “resurface” your skin. How Laser Resurfacing Works

Laser resurfacing is the use of a laser light (CO2, erbium) to remove the top layers of skin. It leaves the remaining skin cells located within the hair follicles to “resurface” the areas that have been removed. A CO 2 laser treatment penetrates into the dermis and stimulates collagen production. It increases collagen production under the skin cells to tighten the skin layer and reduce fine wrinkles. The treatment also removes unwanted skin pigmentation and DNA-damaged cells in the more superficial layers. The result is fresh skin with more pigmentation, decreased fine wrinkles, and even texture.

This procedure has been shown to decrease your chances of getting skin cancer by removing all the damaged cells. The different laser techniques are Active FX, Deep FX, and Total FX (a CO 2 laser by Lumenis). Active FX is the surface treatment of the skin that concentrates on superficial wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation. The laser spots leave skin tissue between the spots of treated tissue. The untreated portions of the skin heal faster and avoid complications from traditional resurfacing. Note: Individual results will vary. Laser Resurfacing of the Neck

Laser resurfacing of the neck is an alternative for neck rejuvenation. The results of laser resurfacing are more conservative because of the unpredictability of the healing process. The neck skin can be thin in certain areas, making it more susceptible to healing. We approach neck laser resurfacing with more conservative settings. For a neck procedure, we usually recommend either Active FX or Deep FX. You should have realistic expectations from neck resurfacing, with some improvement in fine wrinkles and spots. You should not expect to see miraculous changes. If you repeat the treatments, the results can improve. For starters, your skin will shrink and tighten up to a subtle degree, so wrinkles are less likely to become deeper. The laser takes away the top layers of the skin and allows fresh cells to repopulate the skin. It removes older cells, reduces cells that have acquired cancerous changes, and promotes connective tissue (collagen) under the new layer of skin cells. The procedure decreases the number of older pigment-creating cells (melanocytes), which leads to a decline in the number and severity of sun spots. Laser resurfacing is done under intravenous, local, and regional anesthesia. We combine all of them to make the experience as comfortable as possible. In our experience, our approach provides a much more patient-sensitive experience.

It depends on what you decide to have done. You can laser small parts of your face or your entire face. Just a few small spots can cost between $500 and $1500. For your cheeks, it ranges between $1500 and $2900.

For the whole face, it varies between $3500 and $4500. Our laser resurfacing is based on more than 16 years of experience performing laser procedures.

Consultation

During your initial consultation with Dr. Young, you will be advised to stay off blood thinners and stop taking fish oil, vitamin E, herbal medications, supplements, aspirin, and anti-inflammatories for a week or two weeks prior to treatment. This reduces the risk of bruising. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and relay any concerns and fears to Dr. Young.

Let Dr. Young know any of the prescriptions, over-the-counter remedies, herbal supplements, and oral or topical products that you take, and whether you may be pregnant. It is important to stay off blood thinners and medications two weeks prior to your procedure. At this appointment, we will go over your consents and discuss your health condition and medical history. 

To get ready for your laser procedure, we might recommend you start taking some topical medications two to four weeks prior to the procedure. We want the best for you.
